We want to hate him at the start, and in fact Heath kind of does between the remarks about the horrible wine and horses showing emotion. However, writer Jake Helgren gave Wyatt’s character an arc that really shows a range. And it’s used a lot because it tells a good story. Now that that’s out of the way – onto the good parts! While the storyline has been done to death in Christmas films, it hasn’t been used for gay or queer Christmas films. But as I quite enjoy “Dashing in December”, it’s the small things like these that are hard to miss – or ignore. Wyatt has his say about already having a potential buyer – then bam, new scene! Am I being nit-picky? Perhaps. It’s after mass at church when they are all talking to the realtor about selling the ranch. The other scene is actually more obvious. Yet suddenly it’s the next morning and Wyatt is waking up in his bed? Huh? I understand that it’s a bit early for their first kiss, but it really feels like something is missing to wrap up the evening. Wyatt and Heath have started to relax around each other as the night unfolds. (Thus why the issue is both with the script and editing.) The first is right after the bar dancing scene. There are two specific moments where the forward movement just stops abruptly almost as if there is more to the scene that got edited away for some reason. The trouble is that it feels like there are some scenes actually missing! And no, I don’t mean that we are missing on some backstory or there’s a scene that I envision that would make the film better. While we could get nit picky on how the gist of the film’s storyline follows the over-used trope of a successful son/daughter coming home for the holidays to “fix” the mess back home, ending up falling in love, and staying at home. The two are actually connected: some script issues and some editing problems. Stream A New York Christmas Wedding on Netflix. Before I start to rave about the good bits of “Dashing in December”, let me quickly surmise the few issues I had after watching the film a couple times. I would say the film is less about Gabrielle and Jennifer’s love story and more about Jennifer discovering what and who she wants. A New York Christmas Wedding is all about second chances and even has a religious storyline with Chris Noth as Father Kelly. Azrael turns out to be Jennifer’s guardian angel and gives her a life with Gabrielle (Adriana DeMeo). The falling out leads to a chain of tragic events, including Jennifer burying the side of herself that was in love with Gabrielle. In 1999, around Christmas, Jennifer (Camilla Harden) had a falling out with her best friend Gabrielle (Natasha Goodman). Rent/buy The Christmas House 2: Deck Those Halls on Amazon. Stream The Christmas House on Hallmark Movie Now. In 2021, Hallmark made a sequel to this movie called The Christmas House 2: Deck Those Halls. The LGBTQ+ storyline was seamlessly and naturally added into the fold without Hallmark making a big deal about them being a same-sex couple, or adding any prejudice or coming out storylines. Brandon and Jake’s storyline was a subplot, but an important one as it dealt with them trying to adopt. The Christmas House was quite different from many Hallmark Christmas movies, in a good way-mainly because it dealt with more somber topics before it got its Christmas cheer. Ana Ayora plays Andi, Mike’s hometown love interest. Treat Williams and Sharon Lawrence play their parents. Jonathan Bennett plays Mike’s brother Brandon, and Brad Harder plays Brandon’s husband Jake. Quickly, Mike learns that this Christmas isn’t going to be as happy and magical as he expects. It follows the star of the fictional series Handsome Justice, Mike (Robert Buckley) as he heads back home to help his family turn their home into the Christmas house. The Christmas House is Hallmark’s first movie featuring an LGBTQ+ couple as key characters. (Image credit: Hallmark) The Christmas House (2020)
